Movie night continues at First Church
Posted: Tuesday, Mar 2nd, 2010

Pastor Charles Jeanblanc of the United First Church in Amboy would like the community to know the church is continuing its weekly free supper and movie nights. They are held each week on Thursday night at 7 p.m., in the church fellowship hall. We are having an excellent turnout. Last week many local and church people enjoyed the movie Julie - Julia as well as enjoyed the great potluck food donated by the church ladies and the absolutely great 10 lbs of delicious chicken strips donated by the Countryside Tap Inc. of Sublette. The United First Church and the residents of the Amboy area who enjoyed the great food and movie also would like to mention their appreciation for the Family Video Store in Dixon who provides videos for this weekly community treat.

This is rapidly becoming a free family night out for many folks in the community. The movies are prescreened, current and of the highest quality. Food is usually being served around 6:45 p.m., and the movie previews start around 7 p.m. There is also free soda, popcorn and other snacks provided. As usual, there is no charge and everyone in the community area is welcome. Come hungry and enjoy the fun. Normally the movie would be over and you and your kids would be heading back home and bed a little after 9 p.m.

This week’s movie is "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." It is a moving story fit for the entire family. Eight-year-old Bruno is the sheltered son of a Nazi officer whose promotion takes the family from their comfortable home in Berlin to a desolate area where the lonely boy finds nothing to do and no-one to play with. Crushed by boredom and compelled by curiosity, Bruno ignores his mother's repeated instructions not to explore the back garden and heads for the "farm" he has seen in the near distance. There he meets Shmuel, a boy his own age who lives a parallel, alien existence on the other side of a barbed wire fence. Bruno's encounter with the boy in the striped pajamas leads him from innocence to a dawning awareness of the adult world around them as his meetings with Shmuel develop into a friendship with devastating consequences.

Next week will be the current movie hit, “Australia.” In northern Australia at the beginning of World War II, an English aristocrat inherits a cattle station the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn stock-man to drive 2,000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country's most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbor only months earlier.
