Posted: Tuesday, Apr 2nd, 2013

AMBOY – The Amboy Clippers put together a huge late-inning rally and went on to a double-header sweep over Mendota in varsity baseball action on March 30 at the Amboy field.

In game one, the Clippers cruised to a 6-2 victory. AHS scored five of its runs in the first two innings and were never seriously threatened.

Amboy banged out eight hits, led by Andrew Klein (single, double), Tyson Powers (two singles) and Bailey Appleman (two singles, two RBI). Spencer Johnson added a triple for the Clippers. Klein, Powers, Jackson Sorrells and Reece Howell each drove in one run.

Powers was stellar on the mound, allowing six hits and one earned run in going the distance. He walked three and struck out seven. All six of Mendota’s hits were singles.

A furious rally in the final two frames allowed the Clippers to post an 8-7 victory in the nightcap of the twinbill. Amboy trailed 6-0 through five innings, but it scored five in the sixth and three in the seventh to complete the comeback win.

The Clippers had their bats in mid-season form as they collected 11 hits off of two Mendota pitchers. Sorrells had two singles and a double, and also drove in three runs for Amboy. Howell collected three singles and had three RBI, while Taylor Ikens and Drew Fordham both doubled. Alex Noble helped the cause with two RBI.

Amboy used six pitchers in the contest. Johnson went the first three innings, while Appleman got the final out and was credited with the victory.
