AMBOY - Amboy High School hosted its annual Columbus Day Invitational on Oct. 8 at Shady Oaks Golf Course.
The freshman-sophomore race covered 2.5 miles with 118 participants. Running for the Clippers were Jeff DeLong (37th, 14:57) and Alan Stamberger (72nd, 15:50).
A total of 224 runners participated in the varsity girls' race, with the Lady Clippers finishing 29th in the team standings out of 46 teams.
Jennifer Popovich had Amboy/LaMoille's best finish in 80th place with a time of 20:26. Other competitors for the Lady Clippers were Sydnie Langeler (137th, 22:04), Meredith Stamberger (174th, 22:58), Kaitlin Boers (189th, 23:45) and Laura Rieker (214th, 25:58).
In the varsity boys' race, Amboy/LaMoille finished 27th out of 46 teams. A total of 247 runners participated.
Zach Piper was the first Clipper runner to complete the race in 93rd place with a time of 17:12. He was followed by Skylar Wheeler (121st, 17:48), Ben Hosto (144th, 18:06), Nick Bickett (206th, 19:36) and Nick Dewey (209th, 19:40).
There was also a boy/girl open race with 189 participants completing two miles. A/L did not have any runners in that race.
"Both the boys and girls team competed extremely well with strong placements in the team standings," said coach Bob Halberg. "Meredith Stamberger raced remarkably and is beginning to show her form after being injured at the start of the year. Thanks to the two Nicks (Bickett & Dewey) for wanting to run varsity (both are sophomores). Zach Piper probably ran his strongest race of the season."
