Amboy is preparing for holiday season with Christmas Walk

Posted: Tuesday, Nov 6th, 2012

AMBOY - The 2012 Amboy Christmas Walk “Home for the Holidays” will be held on Sunday, Nov. 25, from 12 to 3 p.m.

One of the highlights of last year’s walk was the “Wreath Decorating Contest,” which will once again be held at the Amboy Bandstand. The contest is open to any business, organization, family, or persons in the Amboy School District. The forms for the wreaths can be picked up at Erbes Technology, The Main Flower Shop, City Hall, or The Amboy News. Entry forms and fees are due back by Friday, Nov. 16. Each contestant will purchase a fresh 24-inch wreath for $10 and can be picked up at Erbes Technology on Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

The decorated wreaths will be displayed at the Amboy Bandstand on the day of the walk.

Each wreath will be judged by the public with a penny contest. Proceeds from this will go to Teen Turf, with the winning wreath displayed at City Hall. Starting at 2 p.m., a Wreath Silent Auction will be held. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Amboy Fire Department. Last year raised over $400 for our local organizations.

We are once again having the coloring contest for children ages Pre-K through fourth grade. Coloring contest pages can be picked up at Clipper Kiddies, Central School, City Hall, or The Amboy News. There will be winners for each grade level. Winners of the contest will be leading Santa into town in a horse drawn wagon ride. Winners will also help light the Amboy Christmas Tree.

Santa will be arriving in Amboy at noon on the Nov. 25. Lead by winners of the coloring contest, he will circle downtown, ending at the Band Stand where he and coloring contest winners will light the Christmas tree. Santa will then be available for visits at the Illinois Fire Store. Pictures will also be taken with Santa with a donation of a canned good.

During the Christmas Walk many businesses will be open for your convenience. Free horse drawn carriage rides are available throughout the afternoon. Victorian carolers will be heard while walking the streets and shopping in the stores. A bonfire will be lit with free cookies, a marshmallow roast, and hot cider while enjoying the musical entertainment at the bandstand.

The Pankhurst Memorial Library will be open from 1 – 3 p.m., for crafts, caroling, and story time beginning at 1:30 – 2 p.m.

New to the walk this year, “Reindeer games” will be held on the Depot Museum Lawn from 12 – 1 p.m., for the kids. Starlight Dance Studio will have performers at 1 p.m., at the bandstand. Craft vendors will be located in the Depot Museum School House. Interested parties for setting up a vendor spot, please pick up a form at City Hall or The Amboy News. The horse drawn wagon rides will drop off and pick up at the craft vendors.

A punch card drawing for wonderful prizes, chamber bucks, coloring contest pages, and talented local musicians will add to the day’s Christmas cheer.

The 2012 Amboy Christmas Walk is sponsored by the Amboy Chamber of Commerce. For more information, call Starlight Dance Studio 815-677-1789, or the Amboy News, 815-857-2311.
