AMBOY - Amboy's annual Veterans' Day Program was held Nov. 12, 2012, at the Amboy High School, presented by the Amboy American Legion Post #453. Guests of the program were National Guard members Jason Wittenauer, Ron Morse, Camden Ross, Vic Garland, David Merriman, and two veterans from Amboy Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, Wilbur Smith and Clarence Portner.
Ten members of the Legion Posted Colors, while Megan Grady, president of the Amboy Junior High School Student Council lead the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Amboy District Concert Band under direction of Kathy Mekeel performed the National Anthem.
After a welcome by Zach Piper, an Amboy High School senior and Student Council president, the Central School students, dressed in red, white and blue shirts, sang "Proud of Our Veterans, under the direction of Terry Weber, music teacher at Central.
Other selections were rendered by the band and the Amboy School District Chorus under the direction of Allen Duerksen. Speakers at the program were Vic Garland and Dave Merriman of the National Guard, and Larry Leffelman of the Amboy Legion.
As a moment of silence was held, Taps was played by Caleb Becker and Ted Fredenhagen. Fredenhagen also gave a rendition of Reveille for the enjoyment of the audience.
The program ended with the Retiring of the Colors by the Amboy American Legion.
