Lady Clippers divide pair of 3 Rivers contests

Posted: Tuesday, Jan 22nd, 2013

Two games could not have been more different if they tried.

On Jan. 17, the Amboy Lady Clippers jumped out to a 15-4 lead and went on to post a 39-28 win over Erie, which came into the contest with a 17-6 record.

Amboy's two post players, Kaitlyn Liebing and Autumn Smith, had 12 points each. Liebing also had 12 rebounds and Smith six. Brooke Lovgren scored eight points, but she had 10 rebounds from her guard position. Kennedy Dinges led the squad with five assists and she had one free throw. Tori Welch, while playing under the weather, still managed four points and four rebounds. Micaela McCoy, also not feeling well, contributed a bucket.

Most fans notice points, rebounds and even assists. But, one thing not mentioned enough is hustle. That is where you have to mention Kaitlyn Appleman. She led the team with three recoveries and once again hustled all over the floor.

All of these contributions added up to a big Three Rivers victory.

Nobody would have thought that two nights later almost nothing would go right. First place Prophetstown was waiting with its 21-3 record and the Lady Prophets prevailed by a 69-29 count.

With sickness still a problem, the Lady Clippers soon found out that foul trouble would add into the mix. Prophetstown jumped out ahead but Amboy only trailed 8-6 halfway through the first quarter. Then the bottom fell out for AHS. The Lady Prophets shot 13 free throws in the first quarter and jumped ahead 24-9. They had eight more free throws in the second quarter and seized a 40-11 halftime lead.

After sitting because of foul trouble, Smith exploded for 11 of her 15 points in the second half. She also pulled down six rebounds and added three blocks to her season total of 48. Lovgren, also ailing, managed two points, three assists and six caroms. Liebing added seven points and four boards. Also, Appleman scored four points.

Amboy has a 12-9 record.
