Students in Mrs. Jones' fifth grade class enjoyed getting dirty making model volcanoes. A volcano is produced over thousands of years as heat and pressure build up. However, this volcano gave the students an idea of what it might look like when a volcano erupts flowing lava. This experiment showed how a chemical reaction can create the appearance of a physical volcano eruption. The students also looked at pictures of volcanoes and became familiar with the different types. A SHIELD volcano, for example, is the most common kind of volcano. The students really enjoyed doing this experiment to finish their chapter on land forms.
