Spitz named grand marshal of Depot Days parade

AMBOY – Rita Spitz of Amboy has been named the grand marshal of the 2013 Amboy Depot Days Lions Club Parade to be held Saturday, Aug. 24, at 3 p.m.

Rita (Kuebel) Spitz was born in Sublette on Nov. 9, 1917.

She married Ken Spitz (now deceased) on Nov. 11, 1942, while he was serving in the United States Army. She has one daughter Sheila, who is married to G.G. Garcia and lives in Amboy; and grandchildren Ileana Garcia-Spitz (Joseph) Wilson of Elsa, Texas, Jorge-Luis Garcia-Spitz of Brooklyn, N.Y., Cristela Garcia-Spitz of San Diego, Calif., and Benjamin and Juan Carlos Garcia-Spitz of Chicago.

In 1949, Rita and her husband opened Spitz Plumbing and Heating. She worked by his side at the business, keeping the books and running the office until he retired and sold the business in 1981.

For 62 years she has been an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She served as president of the Auxiliary and also, the Women’s Organization in St. Patrick Catholic Church. She was a member of the Flamettes, the women’s organization for the Amboy Fire Department, and participated in the annual gatherings of the 99th Infantry Division Veteran’s Organization.
