Grady shines for A-L harriers

Posted: Tuesday, Oct 1st, 2013

Megan Grady was first in two meets last week.

It was a good day for the Amboy-LaMoille cross country teams as they competed in a meet at Mendota on Sept. 24.

For the girls, the Lady Clippers had four runners in the top eight to finish first in the team standings with 27 points. Mendota was next with 46 points, followed by St. Bede (62) and Princeton (97).

Megan Grady continued her excellent running for Amboy-LaMoille by winning the race in a time of 19:59. She bested the second-place runner by more than a minute. Also placing in the top eight for the Lady Clippers were Jennifer Popovich (3rd, 21:38), Erin Hosto (4th, 22:14) and Kaitlin Boers (8th, 22:46).

The remainder of the A-L team consisted of Sydney Langeler (13th, 24:51), Laura Rieker (21st, 26:30), Renee Vaessen (24th, 26:34) and Emma Scully (35th, 30:26).

“The girls ran strong and set the pace from the start of the race,” said coach Bob Halberg. “Scoring only 27 points in a quad meet is very good. With performances like this we should expect strong results the rest of the season.”

In the boys’ competition, Mendota claimed the top spot with 50 points and Amboy-LaMoille was second with 60. St. Bede (100), Putnam County (109) and Princeton (132) finished out the team standings.

Skylar Wheeler (18:41) and Ben Hosto (18:47) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, for the Clippers. Other runners for A-L were Nick Bickett (15th, 19:39), James Blackburn (19th, 19:58), Nick Dewey (23rd, 20:36), Alan Stamberger (26th, 20:47) and Paul Meyer (36th, 22:01).

“The boys were highly competitive considering a couple of the guys were under the weather,” noted Halberg.

Another strong effort from the Lady Clippers allowed them to finish second in the Kewanee Invitational on Sept. 28.

Grady was better than the rest for a second straight outing as she claimed first place in a time of 19:31. Teammate Popovich took ninth place in a time of 21:32 and Erin Hosto was 13th in 22:26.

Other places and times for the A-L girls were Boers (33rd, 24:24), Brenna Rieker (43rd, 25:08), Langeler (51st, 26:07), Laura Rieker (54th, 26:35) and Scully (78th, 33:43).

Chillicothe IVC totaled 66 points to win the team competition and A-L was next with 77.

In varsity boys’ action, running for the Clippers were Ben Hosto (13th, 18:54), Wheeler (14th, 18:57), Bickett (42nd, 21:15) and Dewey (53rd, 22:25).
